Camps Bay at a glance
Camps Bay is known for its long and wide stretch of beach, and while quiet in the winter months, is abuzz with activity in the summer season. Tourists, both foreign and South Africans, flock here in the warmer months and the “secret season” – the autumn months when the weather is still warm but the wind dies down and the days are still quite long.
Apart from the main Camps Bay Beach, there are many others in the immediate vicinity that offer different activities at each. Oudekraal offers a sheltered series of tiny beaches with a well-maintained picnic and braai area. Lui Bay (Witsand) is a popular dive site, Koeël Bay is home to a popular curio market, Bakoven is a rocky outcrop that offers spectacular views, and Glen Beach, on the other side of Camps Bay is the area’s best surfing beach.
Property in Camps Bay is a mix of freehold and sectional title with freehold being the majority and 33,33% sectional title schemes.
Many older homes in this area have been bought over the years specifically to demolish the older building, subdivide and rebuild with a sectional title block in its place, sometimes with duets or four units in place of one home. In these cases, developers have gone for triple storey buildings to maximise on views and these homes are usually built to very high specifications.
Camps Bay enjoys iconic views of the Twelve Apostles mountains as well as the Atlantic Ocean, and property prices here are indicative of whether they enjoy a view or not.
Because this suburb is within easy reach of the city (approximately 10 minutes in non-peak traffic times) and also a quick drive into Hout Bay or Sea Point, it is an ideal location for those either travelling in their own vehicles or by MyCiti bus – as this area is served by three bus routes to surrounding areas.
Camps Bay is serviced by its own schools, preparatory, primary and high – which enables children to go to school within an easy cycle or drive from home. There are, however, good private schools within easy driving distance, namely the Deutsche Schule Kapstadt in Tamboerskloof and St Cyprians in Vredehoek.
