Kuils River at a glance

Originally used as a cattle pen in the 17th century, Kuils Rivier (derived from "River of Pools"), got its name from the nearby river, or kuile, which is Dutch for dams. From the name and history alone, one can tell that the area is still famous for its calm, natural character and luscious green areas. Though you still need to look out for the occasional cow crossing the road, Kuils Rivier is now host to manufacturing companies, such as Coca-Cola. However, the area is still uncommercialised due to a lack of major highways or freeways nearby.

Surrounding Transport

You can access this suburb via train, bus, or taxi, as Kuils River is well located for people working in the Tyger Valley, Bellville, Durbanville, Brackenfell and Stellenbosch areas. Getting in and out of Kuils River is made easy due to the top by-pass road, Saxdown - linking with Brackenfell Boulevard, Bottelary Road, and Langverwacht Road. The R300, linking with the N1 and N2 highways, makes it possible to get to anywhere around the city. The Cape Town International Airport is less than 10km away and there are several airport shuttle services in the area.

Schools and Education

One of the reasons Kuils Rivier is such a sought-after destination for families is that there are excellent schools available in the area. These schools also include two institutions for children with special needs. Some of the schools to choose from include:

The Alta du Toit School (for children with severe intellectual disabilities)

Kuils River Primary

Sarepta Primary School

Good Hope High School

Kuils River Technical High School

Activities and Hotspots

The town is full of history and culture to enjoy over the weekend. The Chicken Coop is a theatre that dates back to the 1700s and can still be visited today. For those who enjoy wine culture, Zevenwacht cellar is not to be missed. The area is every golf enthusiast's dream boasting, the well-known Kuils Rivier Golf club. If you feel your tummy rumbling after a day of fun activities, you can enjoy a monstrous burger at the Grillfather restaurant.
