Vredehoek at a glance

Vredehoek, when directly translated, means “corner of peace" or "peace corner”.  It is a suburb of Cape located in the City Bowl and sits on the slopes of Table Mountain between Devil’s Peak Estate and Oranjezicht.

This suburb was proclaimed after the first world war and expatriates from many European countries settled here after peace was declared.

The appeal of Vredehoek can possibly be attributed to the fact that it is so close to the city centre, but because it sits on the lower slopes of Devil’s Peak has has some of the best views of the CBD, the Waterfront, the harbour and Table Mountain.  The wind, however, does blow a bit more here.

This suburb is popular with DINKYs (dual income, no kids yet) and investors. Lightstone figures indicate that property for sale in Vredehoek attracts at least 44% of recent buyers (in the year April 2015 to March 2016) are in the 36 to 49 year old age bracket, with 27% being 50 to 64 years old.

The neighbourhood is quiet and peaceful, yet has the convenience of being literally a stone’s throw from a glut of restaurants, shops, and the CBD. The Company Gardens, The National Art Gallery, Museum and Houses of Parliament are all within walking distance, and the Table Mountain cableway is only 10 minutes’ drive from Vredehoek.

This suburb is only 4km away from the world-famous Clifton beaches and only 15 minutes from the airport (in normal traffic flow).

Local schools in the area include: Herzlia pre-primary and Herzlia Highlands Primary, Deutsche Schule Kapstadt and the St Martini Deutscher Kindergarten as well as Nazareth House Convent.  The Cape Peninsula University of Technology is just one kilometre away.

There has been much redevelopment of the older blocks of flats for sale in Vredehoek (which are sought after because of their larger rooms and higher ceilings), converting them into trendy apartments which has translated into a revival of the neighbourhood.

Properties for sale in Vredehoek are a mix of freehold (39,63%) and sectional title (60,37%) and the average household income range is R51 000 to R67 000.
