Finding a Home & Moving with your Pet

Finding & moving to a new home, may be one of the most stressful events you'll ever take on. But in the chaos of house hunting, cardboard boxes, packing tape & moving trucks, you may not realise how stressed your pets feel too.

Let's talk about making that move with your pets as easy as possible on you all

Important factors to consider from the start are:

  • The size of the home & garden (cats need less space than dogs, be considerate of this fact)
  • If you have an older dog, a multi-level home may not be idea, as they will find navigating stairs difficult
  • Does the property offer sufficient fencing / walls to keep your pets safely secured & contained within the property
  • Neighbours are a very important consideration, if you have pets that bark or may cause a disturbance to neighbours in close proximity
  • Are pets allowed in the complex you are considering? If you are not moving to a free -standing home, ensure that the Body Corporate or Owner (if you are renting) are happy to allow your pets to move in!
  • Consider a home with tiled, or hardwood flooring - carpets may need to be cleaned regularly, so be mindful of the additional cost involved
  • Are there parks, beaches, facilities where you are able to walk your pets, for additional exercise
  • Check out Veterinarian Clinics in the area, to ensure you are in close proximity in case of an emergency
  • Reputable Pet Sitting Services and/or Boarding Kennels in the area are also a big plus, should you have a need to travel for business, or enjoy taking holidays

Ensuring that move day with my pet is without stress

  • Bring in your moving boxes a little earlier
  • Find a room where they can be kept safe on moving day & on moving day keep them in the particular room/area with some familiar toys and their favourite bed / blanket. Move them from the house last
  • Pet-proof your new home before arrival, to ensure there are no escape routes for your pets or poisonous plants in the garden area.]
  • Ensure their favourite toys, water & food bowls & bedding are already in a secure room, and take them there before letting them "explore" the new home - this way they will feel familiar and less stressed
  • When they seem comfortable, gradually introduce them to the rest of the house, constantly re-assuring them that you are there, and not leaving them alone
  • Your cat litter box can be moved to a more convenient spot in your new home, gradually and over time
  • DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET ALONE in an empty house, make sure you take them to your new home, in your car, or if you are using a pet location service, that they are loaded before the house is empty and delivered to your new home, when you have their safe space sorted

With patience, loads of love & hugs, your pet will be King or Queen of their new castle in no time!
