So you've purchased your first home - now what? Before you even start thinking about what colour cushions to decorate with, let's start with the basics!

It's a good idea to have a guideline before you start thinking about the details. Here's our advice:
Have a Plan
First things first - figure out your budget. Decide what is essential and what you could go without for a bit.
Once you have a budget, put it all on paper to keep yourself accountable and prevent overspending. There's no point in purchasing furniture and picking paint colours if you're not even sure what your plan is yet. Get the measurements of your new house, so you know your furniture will fit, and make sure you're not going to be knocking down the wall you were just about to buy paint for.
Take Your Time
Don't rush big decisions. Play around with different designs and colour until you feel confident about the direction you want to go in!
Also remember, you don't have to figure it all out at once. If your budget doesn't allow it, or you aren't 100% sure about your design - hit the pause button, bring in the basics, and add to your interior collection over time.
Choose the Right Lights
Didn't think lights were a big deal? Don't underestimate their power! Lighting not only plays a big part in setting the atmosphere of your home, it also ensures your house is effectively lit.
Your kitchen and bathroom are two of the most important rooms to focus on when getting the right lighting, because of all the activities you do there. At the same time, consider warmer lighting in your bedroom so that it's relaxing rather than clinical.
Remember: it's not always about the number of lights in the room, but the placement and power of the lights.
Be Careful with Your Colour Palette
If you're still swaying between a multi-coloured wallpaper and something more toned down, stick to neutrals for now.
Painting your walls white for instance, gives you a blank canvas to decorate with frames when you move in. If you need a bit of colour to keep things interesting, bring in some pops of colour with bright living-room cushions, or a playful rug. These are decor pieces that can be easily switched around or replaced.
Have Fun with Your Furniture
You definitely want your furniture to complement each other, but that doesn't mean it needs to look like a display from a furniture store. In fact, that can just come across as plain boring.
Get creative and mix and match some furniture pieces you find from second-hand stores, or that your family wouldn't mind passing on.
